Conference Hopping 2019: UM 2nd International Music Collegiate Workshop and Concert

I recently attended 3 conference related to music education. Here is the summary of the first I attended. The coming days I will share summaries of the two other conferences.

UM 2nd International Music Collegiate Workshop and Concert marks the official collaboration between University Malaya and National Taiwan Normal University, specifically in music related studies.

There was sharing about the current research being carried out NTNU.

MU21C: Music Education for the 21st century

Day 1 marks the start of MU21C and also the official launch of Noss (National Occupational Skills Standards) Level 3 – Music Teaching certificate, endorsed by Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (Department of Skills Development) under the Ministry of Human Resource.

There were also breakout sessions by different experts/academicians conducting sharing on various topics such as early music education and music exams. I attended one about using technology in the studio by Prof George Hess of Sunway University. Many sites and apps he mentioned, I have already came know to them through self-research during my previous job experience at international schools. It is interesting to note that there are really only a handful of useful free resources to come by for the music classroom and many are best used for learners from secondary level onwards.

Day 2

Further plenaries and breakout sessions on various topics on music education and also further explanation on Act 652 in regards to the implementation of NOSS Level 3 for Music Teaching certificate. NOSS Level 3 may be acquired via 3 pathways: (a) through an accredited centre (b) evidence of prior achievement (PPT) (c) dual learning system (a form of apprenticeship)

Some notes on Music Teacher Board (MTB), an exam board based in London. Promotes convenient exam schedule whereby students can be enrolled for exams anytime of the year, lower exam cost, most components of the exam are entirely prepared, audio recording submission(similar to GCSE music exam submission), specialist evaluation, more freedom in exam repertoire (students can choose any 3 preferred repertoire from the repertoire list, not confined to genre/style).
